Welcome to my psychology practice, Bowers Psychology PLLC.
I am a licensed clinical psychologist providing psychotherapy with adults. In starting psychotherapy, it is important to find a psychotherapist whose approach to treatment and manner of relating to you are well-aligned with your needs.
My psychotherapy sessions center around your specific concerns. The focus of psychotherapy, broadly and within each session, is guided by what you seek to change. Individuals use psychotherapy to make changes in a wide variety of areas, which in turn can lead to other (sometimes unexpected) positive outcomes such as heightened self-awareness and well-being, closer connections with others, improved daily functioning and fulfillment, greater clarity in decision-making, enhanced focus and productivity, and deeper satisfaction with the quality of their lives.
In addition to a strong commitment to psychotherapy based on your particular needs, I bring a caring presence and professional expertise informed by more than 20 years of clinical practice as a licensed psychologist.
I have found that good psychotherapy promotes discernment of one’s difficulties, helps enhance wellness and alleviate distress, and invites compassion for the suffering and vulnerability that arise with those difficulties. I believe that psychotherapy is ultimately beneficial in helping individuals to live well, to develop authentic and enriching relationships, and to find meaning and fulfillment in their lives. Through many years of practicing as a psychologist, I consider psychotherapy to be a highly valuable process of investing well in oneself to yield immediate and future benefits.
My approach to psychotherapy
My office, a welcoming space
My work as a psychologist is grounded in my understanding of how change occurs in our lives and how psychotherapy can be effective in helping you facilitate those changes. To highlight what I hold central in my approach to psychotherapy:
With greater awareness of ourselves and our circumstances, we gain greater choice in how we live. In order to develop effective ways of coping with difficulties, you need to have as full awareness as possible of those difficulties. I use psychotherapy sessions to increase your awareness – your thoughts, emotions, and physical reactions in your body – related to the issues of concern. I also emphasize examining how current circumstances, environment, and past experiences may influence present difficulties and coping. With greater awareness and understanding of what is troubling you, it is possible to choose how to respond accordingly.
Action is needed for change to occur. A key element of psychotherapy is your agency in creating desired change. I use psychotherapy sessions to discuss actions, behaviors, decision-making, and practices to help promote change. Psychotherapy includes a focus on developing useful coping skills and strategies and, furthermore, opportunities to reflect on and evaluate the impact of those coping skills and strategies as you put them into practice.
Trust within the therapeutic relationship is essential. Confidentiality provides the foundation for candid dialogue and expression and is discussed explicitly from the start. The relationship between you and the psychotherapist works effectively when you are treated with respect and your experiences are met openly. Because psychotherapy addresses concerns that are often vulnerable and painful, the therapeutic relationship must develop as a safe and trusted space. My style is best described as one of compassionate curiosity – a stance of exploring and wondering about your reactions with kindness, respect, and empathy rather than judgment. In psychotherapy I bring a steady, attuned, and empathic presence which is especially needed when encountering painful and difficult aspects of the work.
Psychotherapy offers a dedicated, deliberate practice to address suffering, struggles, and sorrows that we experience in our lives. The therapeutic relationship can provide vital support, guidance, and hope during times of uncertainty and despair. In psychotherapy you may discover meaning and opportunities for creativity in connection with your difficulties. You may create ways to be new and different in who you are and how you choose to live in your particular circumstances.
